Half-day excursion - Classical Bologna
September 10, 2014
from 3.30 pm until 6.00 pm
Bologna is the capital of this prosperous region of Italy: Emilia Romagna. Not yet contaminated by mass tourism, the city is the ideal choice for cultural interludes as well as leisure activities and relaxation. Bologna has a number of nicknames: la dotta (the learned) for its ancient university, la rossa (the red) for the warm colour of its roofs and houses, and la grassa (the fat) for the wonderful food.
The tour includes the visit to all the palaces and monuments surrounding the main square of Bologna: Basilica of St. Petronio, the Palazzo of Podestà, Palazzo Re Enzo, Fountain of Neptune, Palazzo d’Accursio and the Sala Borsa, the main library of the city.
The tour guide will show you the Archiginnasio, located in an elegant 16th-century building, that was built as the first "single" seat of the University of Bologna and the Anatomy Theatre where corpses were sawn up during medicine and anatomy lessons. Moreover, walking through the busy narrow alleyways of the market, you will reach the Complex of Santo Stefano which is locally known as Seven Churches and Holy Jerusalem. The itinerary comes to an end at the foot of the Two Towers, the taller one is called the Asinelli while the smaller but more leaning tower is called the Garisenda, that are the landmark of the city.
The meeting point is in front of Neptune fountain in Piazza Maggiore at 3.30 pm
It is a 2 hours and a half walking tour.
There will be a tour guide speaking in English.
Headphones will be provided.
Conference Dinner
September 10, 2014
from 7.30 pm at Palazzi Grassi, Via Marsala 12 Bologna
GRASSI PALACE
Together with few other noble dwellings - such as for instance Casa Isolani and Casa Reggiani - the palace is one of the few surviving examples of Medieval urban configuration. The arcade is supported by wood beams in the typical 'crutch' shape, while the main gateway presents a pointed arch lintel, and the one-light windows show terracotta decorations.
In the 15th-century inner courtyard intaglio works by the woman sculptor Properzia de Rossi and a Madonna with Child, a 16th century terracotta, are worth mentioning.
In the patrician chapel, Giuseppe Mazza made stucco decorations, while ornamentation is by Ercole Graziani (1704). Today, the palace, restored between 1910 and 1913, is the seat of the Officers' Club.
Daytime Social Program
September 9, 2014 - FULL DAY Tour - Ravenna
September 11, 2014 - HALF DAY Tour - Dozza
Minimum of attendees: 15 people per each tour.
RAVENNA
Ravenna was the seat of the Roman Empire in the 5th century and then of Byzantine Italy until the 8th century. It has a unique collection of early Christian mosaics and monuments. The UNESCO protects eight buildings – the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Neonian Baptistery, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Arian Baptistery, the Archiepiscopal Chapel, the Mausoleum of Theodoric and the Church of San Vitale. They show great artistic skill, including a wonderful blend of Graeco-Roman tradition, Christian iconography and oriental and Western styles.
Participants will also have the opportunity to taste typical dishes from Romagna’s culinary tradition, in Ravenna’s historic centre.
DOZZA
Dozza is located on the gentle slopes of the Bolognese hills (about 15 km east of Bologna). Cobbled side streets and an imposing medieval castle make this hemlet one of the region's most picturesque towns; add uncontaminated natural surroundings and it becomes a fascinating tourist attraction well off the beaten path. The name "Dozza" derives from the word "doccia" (shower, water), which is paradoxical considering the town is best known for, and has made its fortune with, the quality wine it has produced for centuries. Although the site has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, the city structure we admire today originated in the 13th century.
This tour takes full advantage of what Dozza has to offer, allowing the visitor to discover the medieval town, the ancient Romanesque church of Santa Maria, and most of all, the 13 th century fortress, rebuilt in the late 15 th century by Caterina Sforza. The castle's rooms retain much of their original flavour: halls, bedrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and the terrifying dungeons where you can still see the graffiti written by its unfortunate inmates.
